This is an already present technique which has soared in popularity in recent times. One can modify and enhance the skin behavior through target specific delivery of various drugs through the surface. liposomes, transfersomes, ethosomes, niosomes are various vehicles that facilitate delivery of a chemical active into the skin.

We can further modify the stratum corneum by hydration and chemical enhancers,

or bypass or remove this tissue via microneedles, ablation and follicular delivery.

Electrically assisted methods (ultrasound, iontophoresis, electroporation, magnetophoresis, photomechanical waves) show considerable promise.

Of particular interest is the synergy between chemical enhancers, ultrasound, iontophoresis and electroporation.these techniques are now on exponential rise.as a clinician seeks to improve color, texture tone and pigmentation to achive a better looking skin.

Transdermal drug delivery of ionized drugs can be enhanced by iontophoresis. Drug in the ionic form, contained in some reservoir, can be phoresed through the skin with a small current across two electrodes, one above the reservoir and one at a distal skin location. Positive ions can be introduced from the positive pole, or negative ions from the negative pole. The design and development of iontophoretic devices are rather simple.
